Every measurement here is in centimetres, because you are hanging art in Australia, not converting inches in your head. Rule of thumb before anything else: go one size bigger than your first instinct. Small art on a big wall is the most common regret we hear about.

Canvas sizes at a glance

• 20x30 cm (8x12"): desks, shelves and small nooks. Sits happily leaning against a wall rather than hung.
• 30x40 cm (12x16"): hallways, above side tables, or as the supporting piece in a set.
• 40x50 cm (16x20"): the most popular pick. Right above a desk or monitor, readable without dominating.
• 50x70 cm (20x28"): statement piece for an office or gym wall, readable from across the room.
• 70x100 cm (28x40"): the whole wall is the frame. One of these carries a room on its own.

Room by room

• Above a desk or monitor: 40x50 cm or 50x70 cm, hung so the centre of the canvas sits at eye level when you are standing, roughly 145 to 155 cm from the floor.
• Above a couch or bed: art should span 60 to 75 percent of the furniture width. For a standard 2.2 m couch, that means one 70x100 cm piece or a set of three 40x50 cm canvases with 8 to 10 cm gaps.
• Home gym or garage: 50x70 cm minimum. You are reading it mid-set from metres away, not admiring it up close.
• Hallways: 30x40 cm pieces in a row work better than one large piece, since you view them side-on while moving.
• Video call background: 40x50 cm hung just above head height in frame. Sharp typography reads well on camera; busy art turns to noise.

Building a set

Hanging heights that always work

• Single piece on an empty wall: centre at 145 to 155 cm from the floor.
• Above furniture: leave 15 to 25 cm between the furniture top and the canvas bottom.
• Sets: treat the whole set as one shape, then centre that shape using the rules above.
